            TheSchool Committee settled into silence shortly after the appointed hour of 8a.m. The clerk read the following selection from the 1974 edition of the IowaYearly Meeting (Conservative) Discipline (p. 50):

            Theintellect is an integral part of our spiritual

equipment; its development bringsgrowth in personality

 and increased ability to face difficult moral issues. . . .

            Theability to think creatively is more important

than the accumulation of factionalknowledge. We need

to guard against methods ofteaching that suppress freedom

of thought and inquiry.

 

We approve the minutes from ourmeeting on 10 October 2009.

 

Wegive final approval for the proposed changes in our handbook: The SchoolCommittee approves the addition to the Head of School job description toinclude fundraising, as suggested in the Search Committee Report.

 

Weapprove the change in schedule for Head of School evaluation, beginning withthe current (2009-10) year.

 

We approve laying down the Technology Committee.

 

Weappreciate the work of the Facilities Committee regarding a new farm building.We commit to discussing the question of that building at the next meeting.

 

We approvethe decision of the Human Resources Sub-Committee to simply request comments toevaluate the interim head, rather than using the full survey.

 

Weapprove Ginny Winsor (Interim Head), Margie Figgins (Director of Development),and Debbie Galusha (Clerk of the School Committee) to authorize payouts fromthe Westwood account #7723.

 

Weapprove a draft budget for 2009-2010. In January we will consider the budgetwith the suggested changes for final approval.

 

Weapprove changing the date of our January meeting to 6 February 2010 to allowmore time for the Search Committee to interview candidates for the position ofHead of the School.

 

Theclerk will write a response to the students regarding their letter to us aboutthe arts program at the school. The Academic Sub-committee will consider theissues. We are glad to hear from Nicole of the availability of digitalphotography, drawing and a possible sculpture class. Russ Leckband offers hisservices to work on repairing the kiln.

 

Wethank Larry Marsh for his attendance today as a representative from the SchoolFoundation Trustees.

 

Themeeting closed at 9:30 a.m. to move into a closed session. At 9:45 a.m. webegan our retreat with Bonnie Williams as facilitator.
