Human Resources Subcommittee Recommendation Regarding the
Employment of School Committee Members


In order to avoid possible conflicts of interest between the governing board and the Director of the school, School Committee members are expected to comply with the following guidelines:

1.) No School Committee member shall apply to become an employee of the school, either during the term of office or for a period of one year after the term expires.

2.) School Committee members may do paid work for the school provided
that all of the following conditions apply:

  1. The Director initiates the offer of employment.

  2. The period of employment will be temporary and short term, such as the completion of one specific project.

  3. There shall be a signed agreement between the Director and the School Committee member, stating the scope and duration of the work to be done and the amount and timing of compensation.

  4. Any time a School Committee member does paid work for the school, the Human Resources subcommittee will be informed, in advance of the formal offer of employment, of
    1. ) the expected duration of employment,
    2. ) the amount to be paid, and
    3. ) the reasons why that School Committee member is the best choice to do the work.

  5. During the period of employment, the School Committee member shall not attend executive sessions and, if perceived conflicts of interest arise, may also be asked to temporarily stand down from a subcommittee or even from the School Committee.
