SCATTERGOOD FRIENDS SCHOOL

DEVELOPMENT REPORT
March 31, 2002

Since the last meeting of the School Committee the activity in the development office has changed significantly. Following a discussion with Ken Hinshaw, Director, and at the recommendation of my physician I have been on medical leave since January 31. During this time the basic development activities have been carried out by Walter Sparks. Since the development office continues to be located in my home, I have responded to phone calls and emails directed specifically to me but more proactive activities have been put on hold…however, nothing has been canceled. During this time I have been able to focus on future options and have undergone more medical tests than the human body appreciates! It has been recommended that I undergo surgery to implant a neurostimulator in my spine. Doesn’t that sound like fun?! With the external control, the goal is to mask the higher levels of pain. There will be an initial 5-day trial period beginning April 8. If the outcome of this trial is positive the implant will take place immediately. As you are well aware, it has been a long time since I could sit through a meeting or in a social setting without a great deal of pain. It might be possible that this could improve with the use of the neurostimulator. I am more than willing to give anything a try!

There are so many times when I have wanted to thank each of you for your ongoing support and understanding. Even during the most difficult times I have felt your sincere caring and I want to extend a special thanks to the development committee. You have made a significant commitment to me over the years and I hope you each know how very committed I am to Scattergood. I believe completely in the mission and purpose of this wonderful community. When I first interviewed for this position I emphasized my belief in the need to hire a development director who was not looking to hop from job to job and one who was looking at this job as a long-term commitment. Taking time to really get to know alumni and donors is vital in cultivating donors. This is just as important today as it was 6 years ago. That is another reason I am willing to do whatever I can to improve my physical health. I will send you an email as soon as I have an indication of how well the neurostimulator works.

In the meantime, Jan and Walter are working together to stay on top of all donations and database changes. Ken and I will be figuring out how to handle the annual Phonathon that is traditionally held in early May. The reminder letter for the Annual Fund will be sent shortly.

If you have any questions, I would be pleased to answer them. Ken, Bruce Rohwer as development committee clerk and Lucy Hansen, School Committee clerk will also be able to answer most questions. I apologize for not being at the School Committee but that is part of the requirement of the medical leave. You will certainly be in my thoughts throughout the day.

Warmest appreciation,

Nancy Ryan
